Cast or minted bullion bars: what changes in an RFQ?

What a minted bar specification covers.

Minted bars are cut or formed to a controlled shape and then finished with a defined design. They are commonly associated with smaller, standardised unit weights, although the available range depends on the producer. The exact product—not the word “minted”—determines its purity statement, packaging, assay information and serialisation.

For an RFQ, specify the required metal, fine weight, purity, producer or acceptable producers, unit count and whether intact producer packaging is required. If packaging or an assay card matters to internal controls or onward distribution, make that requirement explicit rather than assuming it accompanies every minted format.

What a cast bar specification covers.

Cast bars are produced by pouring refined metal into a mould. Surface appearance and dimensions can vary more than on a minted product, while larger wholesale weights are commonly supplied in cast form. Markings may include the producer, metal, purity, weight and a serial or lot identifier, but the exact combination is product-specific.

A request for “one cast bar” is incomplete. State the required fine weight, purity and acceptable producer range, then define whether dimensions, serialisation, a certificate or particular markings are decision criteria.

Do not infer premium, liquidity or availability from form.

The form alone does not establish the premium, resale route, current stock or delivery timing. These depend on the specific product, quantity, market conditions, counterparty review and physical-completion route. A catalogue image also does not confirm that the pictured production year, serial style or packaging is the lot being quoted.

Commercial comparisons should therefore use like-for-like quotations: the same metal, fine weight, purity, unit count, producer constraints, completion point and quotation time.

A concise RFQ checklist.

A well-defined request lets the trade desk compare the requested format with realistic alternatives without changing the buyer’s underlying requirement.

• Metal, purity and total fine weight.
• Minted, cast or either form.
• Preferred producer and acceptable alternatives.
• Unit weight and number of units.
• Packaging, assay, serialisation or document requirements.
• Required timing and preferred physical-completion route.
